It Begins: Democrats Repeat ‘Lie of the Year’ on Medicare

Well, that didn’t take long:

In an effort to scare senior citizens, Democrats repeated and overheated a charge that Politifact branded the 2011 “lie of the year” upon hearing that Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has joined Mitt Romney as a running mate. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called Ryan “the architect of the Republican plan to kill Medicare” in a fundraising message sent by DCCC executive director Robby Mook. Mook explained the thinking behind making that charge in the next line, explaining that he wants to define Ryan in the minds of the American people as quickly as possible.

Remember, Politifact is a Left-leaning outfit, yet even they felt compelled to slam Democrats for their egregious distortions of Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan.  This debate is just getting (re) started, so here are a few key points to keep in mind as the “kill Medicare” falsehood gets spread far and wide:  More…

GOP senators again ask 9th Circuit to abandon $1M Hawaii conference

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and Judiciary ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Friday warned the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals again that it should cancel its planned August conference in Hawaii, which the senators estimate will cost more than $1 million.”During this time of extraordinary debt, and given the history of opulence — including repeated trips to the Hawaiian Islands — we believe you should cancel the million-dollar conference,” they wrote in their July 13 letter to Alex Kozinski, chief judge for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.  More…

Essential Air Service (video)

If the House is to live up to the promises the Republican majority made to the American people to bring spending under control, some tough choices are going to have to be made. But this amendment isn’t one of them. This is about the easiest choice the House could possibly make: to put an end to the so-called “Essential Air Service” that lavishly subsidizes some of the least essential air services in the country. This program shells out nearly $200 million a year – including $114 million of direct taxpayer subsidies – to support empty and near-empty flights from selected airports in tiny communities – most of which are just a few hours’ drive from major airports.

Roll Call Vote on the Amendment

Unfortunately four GOP members from California voted no – Bono Mack, Calvert, Gallegly, and McKeon and Lewis abstained.

Tax dollars fund pet-shampoo ad, reality show in India

Sen. Coburn says brands don’t need help, but federal deficit does

(WASHINGTON TIMES) — Every year, the federal government spends hundreds of millions of dollars to market agricultural products abroad — sending taxpayers’ money to subsidize the advertising campaigns of some of the country’s largest brand names, according to a report by the Senate’s chief waste-watcher.

Sen. Tom Coburn said taxpayer money has gone to subsidize projects such as a promotion of pet shampoo and a reality television show in India sponsored by an American cotton promotor. The Oklahoma Republican said it’s time to trim the flow.  More…

Another Fake Debt Ceiling Fight On The Horizon?

May 19, 2012 By Taxpayers To Refuel Government Debt 1.2 Trillion More SC Another fake debt ceiling fight on the horizon?

I remember when I was a teenager and I was constantly borrowing money from my parents because it seemed that my lifestyle had become more than I could afford. I would beg, plead, tell tales of dire misery if I didn’t get the money, lie, say “oh I promise this will be the last time I ask”, and lastly, pout! Washington D.C. reminds me too much of myself as a teenager; only these people in Washington are supposed to be adults, aren’t they? Why is all of this important? My parents finally had to put a stop to the borrowing and teach me some hard lessons about money. The same thing is happening and needs to be done in our government.  More…

Deep-pocketed environmental groups are collecting millions of dollars from the federal agencies they regularly sue under a little-known federal law, and the government is not even keeping track of the payouts, according to two new studies.  Read more:

Wanted: A Wise and Frugal Government

April 18, 2012 By Gary M. Galles

What drives domestic politics today is government income redistribution. It forms the core of virtually every fiscal battle, since every policy that gives some what they don’t pay for must be funded from others’ pockets.

That gets highlighted during income tax season. The lowest 40% of earners now pay negative federal income taxes as a group (largely due to the refundable Earned Income Tax Credit), and those earning moderate incomes pay relatively small amounts. That forces higher earners to shoulder essentially the entire income tax burden, as well as the future costs of massive deficits.  More…

Government Gone Wild: GSA Wasting Your Money (video)

April 17, 2012 By The
GSA scandal gives us a look into the ruling elites’ lack of respect for tax dollars. I am glad this is getting some media coverage, but this happens in many agencies, and we need to search throughout government and stop all of this high living. The first place to start is the White House and the US Congress.

Europe‘s sovereign debt crisis exploded back into life on Tuesday, with markets across the continent rocked by a wave of panic selling amid renewed fears about the impact of savage austerity measures in Spain and Italy.

The mood of uneasy calm seen across Europe since the Greek bailout in February was shattered as financial markets took fright at evidence of a double-dip recession and growing popular opposition to welfare cuts and tax increases.  More…

18 Fun Ways to Waste Taxpayer Dollars

Wastebook 2011

We’ve previously highlighted some of the content of Senator James Coburn’s Wastebook project, but in introducing the 2011 edition when it came out, we skipped over some of the lower dollar expenditures that, well, were just really wacky.

Like a $592,000 study on why chimpanzees throw poop!

Fortunately, Money Morning’s David Zeiler didn’t skip over these line items. Instead, in addition to the chimp-poop-throwing study, he summarized seventeen more of the earmarked expenditures that professional politicians put forward that fall into the “What?! They spent money on what?!” category of government spending.

And here they are:  More…

Glenn Beck and Kevin Freeman: The 2008 crash is economic terrorism against USA

On GBTV Glenn Beck is talking with Kevin Freeman about the 2008 crash that is economic terrorism against USA.

Who’s really to blame for America’s catastrophic financial meltdown and devastating national recession? Contrary to what the “Occupy Movement” might tell you, it’s not greedy Wall Street executives. No, as one of America’s top financial professionals reveals in this shocking new book, the real culprit is economic warfare, with our foreign enemies exploiting our lurking financial weaknesses.

Firm Sells Solar Panels – To Itself, Taxpayers Pay

Barack Obama 9 SC 300x200 Firm sells solar panels to itself, taxpayers pay

A heavily subsidized solar company received a U.S. taxpayer loan guarantee to sell solar panels to itself.

First Solar is the company. The subsidy came from the Export-Import Bank, which President Obama and Harry Reid are currently fighting to extend and expand. The underlying issue is how Obama’s insistence on green-energy subsidies and export subsidies manifests itself as rank corporate welfare.

Here’s the road of subsidies these solar panels followed from Perrysburg, Ohio, to St. Clair, Ontario.   More…

End collective bargaining for government unions

The average government worker now receives hourly pay and benefits that are 44 percent higher than the average private sector worker’s. Those high costs are bankrupting state and local governments—and taxpayers—across the nation. But it doesn’t have to be this way. A package of bills being considered by the Arizona legislature would reform this unfair spoils system, protecting workplace freedom, the state’s economy, and all Arizona taxpayers.Nick Dranias of the Goldwater Institute highlighted the stark choice before the Senate Government Reform Committee on Feb. 1, 2012. WARNING: Country headed for ‘massive fiscal cliff’

Bernanke warns lawmakers country headed for ‘massive fiscal cliff’
By Peter Schroeder

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke cautioned Congress against taking the nation over a “massive fiscal cliff” at the end of the year, asking lawmakers to come up with more gradual plans to implement major policy reforms.

The central bank head struck a nervous tone Wednesday about what the end of the year could hold for the fledgling economic recovery, given the slew of overhauls to taxes and spending set to occur if Congress does not step in.

“Under current law, on January 1, 2013, there’s going to be a massive fiscal cliff of large spending cuts and tax increases,” he told the House Financial Services Committee. “I hope that Congress will look at that and figure out ways to achieve the same long-run fiscal improvement without having it all happen at one date.”  Read the story here.
